Reiki (pronounced “RAY-key”) is an ancient method of healing from Tibet. “Rei” means “universal” and “ki” corresponds to the “life force energy” known as Chi or prana in other Eastern systems like acupuncture or yoga. Thus, Reiki refers to the healing qualities of “universal life force energy.” Rediscovered in the late 19th century by a Japanese monk named Mikao Usui, Reiki works on physical, mental and emotional levels, restoring balance to body, mind and spirit.
Reiki is not meant to replace professional medical advice but rather to complement other treatment modalities by encouraging very deep relaxation. Practitioners do not diagnose or prescribe medication.

FAQs About Reiki
It is common for people to react with discomfort and distrust when telling others that Reiki is an offering. Reiki is spiritual in its nature and is a way of life. However, it is open to all people, of all religions and beliefs. People come to Reiki with a willingness to learn, an open heart and mind. If you have more questions about this topic, regardless of your religious affiliations, please visit www.christianreiki.org.
HOW CAN REIKI HELP ME?
Reiki can be used as a complement to other healing modalities. Reiki is non-invasive, gentle, safe, and powerful, providing relaxation to both the recipient and practitioner. This relaxed effect becomes a part of the healing since our bodies heal best when in a state of relaxation. People have reported healing on a variety of symptoms. Reiki is not meant to replace other treatments but can complement them well. It does not replace medical advice. I recommend you continue to consult with any other healthcare providers and inform them of your choice to receive Reiki in addition to their offerings.
It often takes more than one session to achieve your goals but some changes are generally noted after a session. Distance healing sessions are possible (since energy is free flowing without limits) and achieve the same, if not better results. Receiving from a place of comfort for you (i.e. home) often results in increased relaxation,
making it easier to release blockages, disruptions, depletion and/or excesses of energy.
IS THERE ANY RESEARCH ON THE EFFECTS OF REIKI?
The National Institutes of Health has funded several medical centers throughout the United States in performing clinical research on Reiki and its effects on a variety of conditions. In addition to recipients’ responses, some published studies have noted positive effects for increased relaxation and help with pain management. There was a recent article in one of the local Baltimore papers noting the effects of Reiki on people having survived serious motorcycle accidents. Studies have been or are being conducted on the effects of Reiki on stress, with Cancer treatments, AIDS, Cardiovascular Health and Diabetes, to name a few.
HOW DOES REIKI DIFFER FROM OTHER ENERGY HEALING?
Reiki has its own intelligence and connects with the innate intelligence of the recipient. It differs from other forms of energy healing in two main ways. The first is that although we all can practice forms of energy healing (like with an intention of prayer), Reiki energy is passed from a Reiki Master Teacher to a student through an attunement process. Reiki does not generally make distinctions between roles (practitioner vs. student), however this attuning process sets it apart. Each participant is active and is receiving equally, without distinction between roles. The practitioner is a “vessel” for the Reiki energy to flow. The attunement helps open the energy centers, or chakras, bringing balance to them. The Reiki energy is passed from the practitioner to a students’ hands allowing them to share Reiki with themselves and others going forward indefinitely.
The other main difference between Reiki and other forms of energy healing is that Reiki does not deplete the practitioner, rather, it provides more energy to both participants. Both are “blessed by the experience” as noted at the end of the attunement process in all levels of Reiki.
I’M NOT IN A HEALING PROFESSION, CAN I STILL LEARN IT?
Yes, of course you can. Since Reiki is becoming more accessible and offered through some medical and nursing programs, it is common to find healthcare practitioners offering it to their patients. However, by definition, Reiki is “Universal Life Force Energy” and it can be learned by all people. Children and families benefit from using it as well. Reiki energy can be used to help both others and yourself.
CAN I TAKE THE REIKI MASTER CLASS EVEN IF I DON’T WANT TO TEACH?
Reiki offers the opportunity to clear our minds, gain energy, heal and deepen our clarity about our life purpose. The attunement begins an integration process that can take varying amounts of time for individuals to fully absorb. It is possible that even if at the time of taking the class you don’t want to teach (or feel ready) that this can change. I recommend if you have an interest in it and are curious, and committed to your path that we have a conversation prior to the Master class. Some people choose to become a Reiki Master for their own personal development. After taking any of my Reiki classes, I offer an opportunity to apprentice with me and audit the classes again. Reiki is an invitation to commit more fully to the essence of who you are and to share that with yourself and others.
HOW LONG DO I NEED TO WAIT BEFORE TAKING THE NEXT LEVEL OF REIKI?
There is not a set time range or “correct” answer to this question. Training in Reiki opens doors. As unique individuals, this process of opening can take a short or a longer amount of time, depending on the person, their commitment, timing, and circumstances. Some Reiki Master Teachers believe that each person should be required to complete a certain amount of sessions and/or time prior to taking the next level. I have had people take the 3 levels within a few months time if I felt they would take the training into the world to help others while helping themselves too and if they felt ready. Each level of Reiki training offers different information. To see flyers describing more details about the skills learned in each level of Reiki training, please click here.
“I’ve had the pleasure of attending three of Wendy’s classes – one on nutrition and two to learn Reiki. She is informed, smart, intuitive, warm and compassionate in her work, and her Reiki “touch” is very healing. Wendy is a bright light on this planet. Don’t miss a chance to work with her!”
