Reiki as a Supportive Modality

Reiki (pronounced “RAY-key”) is an ancient method of healing from Tibet. “Rei” means
“universal” and “ki” corresponds to the “life force energy” known as Chi or prana in other
Eastern systems like acupuncture or yoga. Thus, Reiki refers to the healing qualities of
“universal life force energy.” Rediscovered in the late 19th century by a Japanese monk named
Mikao Usui, Reiki works on physical, mental and emotional levels, restoring balance to body,
mind and spirit.

If you are a patron of other healing modalities, you have taken a big step in choosing to create
health in your life. Many of you have probably witnessed profound changes in your life from
choosing to commit to appointments and listening to your innate wisdom resulting from your
sessions. People who have experienced Reiki have reported a variety of results. Some of
these include realizations that can occur on a physical and/or mental/emotional level,
increased life enjoyment, lowered stress responses and a more positively reported quality of
life.

As students of life and of alternative healing modalities, you may already recognize the help
that comes from utilizing a variety of self-care techniques when creating health. We can
incorporate Reiki into this self-care regime, along with things like exercise, eating well,
meditation, yoga, thinking positive thoughts, massage, and other forms of body work. Dr.
Epstein refers to how NSA can help release the cells from a hurt or trauma and re-educate the
cell. Reiki can also help to enhance this process and to accept where you are and embrace it
as a lesson in your journey. It offers a window to connect with your innate wisdom and glean
information in a timing that feels “right” for you. As Popeye says “I yam what I yam,” Reiki,
says “I’ll know when I know and expand from there”. From these realizations alone, physical
changes can occur (along with other changes). Reiki accepts us where we are on our journey
and offers us an opportunity to learn more about ourselves and others. Similar to NSA, Reiki
can be embraced as a way of life, an intention to live with greater freedom (which we really
have had all along) and to live as our unique selves with joy in our hearts.

We can recognize this inner joy and feel moments of blessing, support, compassion, clarity
and love even when living through personal challenge. This duality helps us embrace each
moment, stay open to flow, and connect to a greater sense of purpose. Reiki can be offered as
an external source to support our transitions; the food we eat is another choice we make daily.
The common resistance felt about making changes to food choices reminds me of the
resistance in joints before an entrainment. When working with people I often find that going
through the Reiki attunement process helps create a more seamless path to making changes
in our diet and other physical shifts. These resulting changes still require an acceptance of
where we are and can add subtle shifts to open new doors for savoring the nourishment that
comes from our food and each moment. Some of the shifts related to nutrition may include a
craving of different foods, a change in appetite and a stronger understanding of the connection
between what we eat and our own personal vitality and health. It is possible to feel ease when
making changes in our lives, honoring our truth and essence and receiving the continued FUN
of eating and living on a path of wellness!!
